Course description: A knowledge of the underlying bones and muscles of the face helps us understand how to create a good portrait. In these workshops we will be looking at facial anatomy and how to combine this with measuring techniques to create strong portraits with a good likeness. Course aims and skills/knowledge to be taught • Produce a number of portraits using dry media. • Use a variety of measuring techniques to achieve a likeness. • Develop a basic understanding of the bones and muscles in the face and neck. • Creating form using tone. • Explore a personal and creative response to portraiture. Course outline for the day Day 1 Morning activity • Tina will introduce the aims and content of the course with reference to historical and contemporary artists. • The group will produce investigative drawings of the bones of the skull and neck, muscles of the face. We will also look at the planes and rhythm of lines within the face. Afternoon activity • Tutor demonstration • The group will produce a Portrait using a charcoal reduction method using blocks of tone as a measuring technique. Day 2 Morning activity • Tutor demonstration. • The group will produce a Portrait using Sanguine pencil using construction lines to create a likeness. Afternoon activity • Tutor demonstration. • We will combine the measuring techniques already used to explore the blocking in method to create a Portrait working on a mid-ground. We will use charcoal pencils and white pastel pencils After you book a place you will be emailed the full workshop outline which includes the material list and a list of the materials provided.
