Course description: To explore mark making inspired by music. To draw as an experience, rather than with any expectation or judgement of what makes a “good” drawing. Ideal for beginners but also suitable for artists looking to try something new. Course aims and skills/knowledge to be taught: · To create drawings inspired by a favourite piece of music · To focus on different elements of songs in order to make a variety of marks: rhythm, texture, melody and mood · To use a range of drawing materials: charcoal, graphite, chalk, pastels · To increase your vocabulary of marks and methods · To understand how what is heard can influence what is drawn, and how a different approach can refresh your drawing practice · To experience how the immersion in the activity of drawing can feel free from the usual expectations and judgements of what makes a “good” drawing Course outline for the day: Morning activity · Elena will introduce the aims and content of the workshop · The group will make their first drawing to their favourite piece of music using their own ear/headphones with their own players. · Elena will play a selection of music to focus drawing on the four aspects: rhythm, texture, melody and mood Afternoon activity · Workshop participants will work to music collaboratively on a large drawing, using insights gained during the morning’s activities · They will also work on a collaborative drawing to a sound piece composed by Bill Laybourne · Participants will end the session by listening again to their chosen piece, and repeating the first exercise. This will then be compared to their first. · The group will discuss their experiences and the drawings made. After you book a place you will be emailed the full workshop outline which includes the material list and a list of the materials provided.
