Course description: Judith will introduce you to the Kantha hand stitch tradition from Bangladesh. Although rooted in the past this style of working, offers the student an opportunity to hand stitch as a calming therapy and to recycle and reuse fabrics. This workshop is equally suited to the beginner and the more experienced stitcher. Once you’ve established your skill you can develop it into 2D or 3D art forms and you’ll always have a faithful friend in your own creativity! Course aims and skills/knowledge to be taught • To understand how hand-stitch has been used for artistic embellishment in both a contemporary and historical sense. • To create a surface/fabric base and apply decorative stitchery. • The history of hand-stitch including contemporary and historical embellishment techniques. • Basic stitching techniques to create a fabric base. • Techniques in finishing and hanging to final work. Course outline for the day Morning activity • Judith will outline all health and safety information. • Judith will introduce the workshop by discussing the aims for the day and showing examples of stitching work. • A demonstration the Kantha stitch and other line stitches. Judith will also assist the group with their own work • Each student will create the fabric base for the final work • Initial design ideas will be developed Afternoon activity • The group will review knowledge and skills acquired in the morning session. • The group will finalise their design ideas and begin final piece • Judith will advise the group on hanging mechanisms and these will be applied. • The group will discuss the outcomes of the day and any areas for future development. After you book a place you will be emailed the full workshop outline which includes the material list and a list of the materials provided.

• If you, the customer cancels your booked workshop, we are unable to offer you a refund. • Transfers to an alternative workshop may be possible depending on the circumstance and is of the discretion of the RBSA Gallery. • In the event of under-subscription, workshops may be cancelled or re-arranged. We will give you as much notice as possible if this happens and you will be able to transfer to another course or receive a full refund. The RBSA is unable to refund additional expenses, such as travel and accommodation. • If you are booked on a workshop and do not turn up on the day, a refund will not be given.
