Our printmaking workshops are perfect for beginners and artists seeking to branch out into a new discipline. Running alongside our Print Prize Exhibition, the classes offer great value for money and the opportunity to learn something new!
Each class is delivered to a high standard by a Member or Associate artist, and there are discounts for those in full-time education.
Sizes are small to enable one-to-one tuition, and art materials and refreshments are included. Certificates can be provided on request.
Copy, Proof, Print Eric Gaskell 20 August
Eric is a professional printmaker who regularly posts tutorials on his Youtube Channel. In this new RBSA workshop he will help you through the steps; from drawing (what works for print?), cutting (which do you need to leave?), proofing to final print.
Embossed Mono-Printing Fae Kilburn 22 August
This mono embossed printmaking workshop is about exploring print through texture and creating printing plates from found objects. The finished prints will have an embossed surface. Fae is a Friend of the RBSA and as an artist with a visual impairment she makes sure her workshops are multi-sensory. Fae’s workshop is open to all, including those with limited sight.

Mezzotint Engraving and Beyond Martin Maywood 23 August
Guest tutor, Martin Maywood, is an experienced mezzotint artist. He is well practised in traditional mezzotint engraving and has also developed some new alternative ways of printing with mezzotint plates. He also rocks and supplies mezzotint plates to other artists around the world.
During Martin’s workshop you with be shown how to engrave and print your own mezzotint engraving and also try out one or two new techniques. The course will cover suitable subject matter and how to transfer images from life, sketch or photograph onto the plate. You will then be shown how to use the scraper/burnisher to engrave your image.
Mastering Monotype Mike Allison 24 August
Discover how to use different monotype techniques and create a multi-plate monotype based on your selected design. Guest tutor, Mike Allison, is an experienced printmaker working in monotype and relief printmaking methods.
Screenprinting with hand-cut stencils Karoline Rerrie 25 August
Learn to make hand-cut stencils of your own images, patterns or designs. Then screen print onto paper using your stencils, silk screens, squeegees and water-based inks. Create layers of different colours and produce a small edition of unique screen prints.
Woodcut Printing for Beginners Margot Bell 29 August
Learn how to make an effective woodcut print in several clear stages. Attendees are welcome to follow the suggested theme of botanica, bugs, and beasties. However, if you have your own theme in mind, you are welcome to work to that instead.
