February at the RBSA: art classes for all and new solo shows!

This month at the RBSA, we’re in for a treat. So whether you are thinking of giving art a try for the first time in one of our workshops, or interested in one of our many new exhibitions, we have something to interest art lovers across the Midlands…

Tony Yates, ‘Low Down Dirty Dog Blues’

You can’t miss the final week of our fabulous display of original artworks, all hoping to catch the eye of new and budding collectors. Priced at £300 and under, this is three-floors of wonderful work that deserves discovery!

Photographic Prize 14 Feb – 9 March


Geoffrey Hodgson, ‘Shelter’

Anticipation is in the air for the fourth RBSA Photographic Prize, celebrating photographic artwork by both emerging and established photographers. This year we are collaborating with the Argentea Gallery to host the show, a space dedicated to portraying only the best of contemporary photography.

Prizes include a top prize of £1,000 and a coveted ground floor solo show for the winner of the People’s Prize. Make sure your voice is heard when you’re visiting, and cast your vote!

Making Together 27 February – 9 March

The end of February sees the RBSA working for the second time with Sense, a national charity dedicated to supporting people with complex communication needs. A series of private workshops conducted by RBSA artists aiding Sense participants produce their artwork will culminate in a spectacular showcase. A rare and insightful display, not to be missed.

Solo Shows

George Jackson ARBSA 11 February – 5 April

3 Raku Ceramic Slabbed Forms

Joining us for a new solo show, George Jackson’s Process and Product is an exhibition of forms intending to communicate how the making process impacts the individual character and structure of the finished piece.

The work displayed will include functional thrown ware, simple pinch pot forms, larger coiled work, decorative slab built ware and some pate de verre cast glass. Ceramic pieces will feature both stoneware and raku fired work.

Brian Fletcher RBSA

11 Feb – 23 March


Multi-media artist Brian Fletcher presents Membranes and Fascias, inspired by a fascination with the Black Country’s industrial sites. These large panoramic paintings, focus on the abstract particular and unfamiliar and are based on the textures and palimpsests of old walls and rusting metal. A series of compelling works, by the winner of the 2009 RBSA Members and Associates exhibition’s major prize.

Linda Nevill

11 Feb – 30 March


This unique show explores original prints and their links to poetry. Responding to subjects such as social issues, the natural world or a piece of poetry, printmaker Linda Nevill collaborates with writers Emma Purshouse and Jane Seabourne on a collection of etchings exploring landscape, still life, flamingos in captivity and football as a man’s game. Don’t miss Linda’s event on March 16, where you will get the chance to meet Linda and also experience some live poetry.

Craft Shows

Carnival 4 February – 1 June


Baked by Lou

If your January blues haven’t dissipated by February 4 then this vibrant array of colourful crafts is precisely what we recommend.

Inspired by the extravagant Carnivals of New Orleans and Brazil, this exhibition includes dazzling jewellery, vivid ceramics and luxurious textiles. Each piece is handmade by its designer and prices start at just £15, so you can take a piece of the vibrancy home with you!

Winter Workshops 11 February – 23 February


Our art workshops are diverse and varied, ensuring there is something for every art enthusiast! This month, we are offering workshops in pastels, landscapes, printing and textiles amongst other things. You will receive the benefit of close tuition from professional artists, certificates of attendance if required and additionally refreshments included in the workshop fee. All workshops run from 11:00 AM to 16:30 PM and are suitable for adults aged 18 or over.
