The RBSA has a new opening for the exciting role of full-time Gallery Director. If you think you might have what it takes, read on to find out more about the position…

The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, located near the historic Jewellery Quarter, is a charity supporting artists and promoting the visual arts through a variety of activities, including exhibitions, workshops and demonstrations.

The Gallery has a changing programme of exhibitions on two floors of gallery space. The ground floor has space for solo shows as well as a Craft Gallery, which has established a reputation as the place to find exciting and unique contemporary craft in the City.

RBSA President Robert Neil invites applications for the position of Gallery Director, saying: ‘After 19 years in post Dr Marie Considine, our current Gallery Director, is retiring. We are now seeking an exceptional person with the vision, ambition and strategic skills to lead the RBSA Gallery in the future.

‘The successful candidate will be joining a highly motivated team of staff and Trustees with a strong programme of exhibitions and engagement activities. This is a unique opportunity to shape an organisation that genuinely strives to offer something to everyone in the diverse community it serves.’

The role of Gallery Director is multifaceted, combining knowledge of art, interpersonal management and marketing skills. This means you can be sure that no one day will be the same!

The Gallery Director will take the role of the RBSA Council’s principle advisor. As such, the successful candidate must have a strong sympathy with the Society’s public-spirited work as a visual arts charity.

The successful candidate will be attuned to the vibrant contemporary art world and the challenges and opportunities of its commercial sector. The Gallery prides itself on showcasing high-profile contemporary artists from the region, as well as bringing the work of nationally and internationally renowned artists to Birmingham through hosting solo shows.

The Gallery Director will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the Gallery, which includes income generation and fundraising, a vital part of ensuring continued success. This involves research, cultivation, budgeting, writing applications, project delivery and reporting.

Fundraising can take the form of creative endeavours: recently the RBSA has organised an exciting Charity Auction in collaboration with Deutsche Bank and Cure Leukaemia.

The modern-day Gallery Director must also have a strong commitment to upholding inclusivity. The RBSA prides itself on being a warm and welcoming community of artists. As Gallery Director, you will play a crucial role in pursuing the RBSA’s goals of access, inclusion and diversity in all of its activities.

The RBSA is looking for a confident candidate with excellent interpersonal skills. The position involves working closely with the membership of the RBSA as well as encouraging and supporting the vital involvement of volunteers. Additionally, you will be consulting with the staff and a group of the Society’s Officers responsible for drawing up our exhibition and events programme.

The Society is a small, yet complex organisation built upon its Members and Associates. The Gallery Director must take a flexible approach, recognising the realities of working within a very tight budget, together with an enthusiasm for all aspects of the role.

This is a challenging but highly rewarding post, one that entails collaborating with some amazing contemporary artists, in a beautiful and unique gallery environment.
