Robert Perry View from Barr Beacon, Summer Clouds over Streetly Painting

£850 estimate

Robert Perry, ‘View from Barr Beacon, Summer Clouds over Streetly’

Robert Perry always enjoyed drawing and painting… his exploration of the countryside, canals and industrial areas of his childhood provided the first sparks of inspiration.

He found himself looking closely, keen from a young age to capture in drawings and paintings what he saw around him.

‘I would explore the local woodlands, derelict buildings, culverts and scrap yards,’ Rob remembers.

‘I’d go out cycling to Tack Wood and Checkhill, Kinver Edge, Gothersley and Highgate Common, or along the canal towpaths past foundries, glass factories, clay mines and steelworks.

Robert Perry The Black Country from Turners Hill, Dudley Painting

£350 estimate

Robert Perry, ‘The Black Country from Turner’s Hill, Dudley’

‘I made my first on-the-spot drawing at the age of nine, in a sixpenny drawing book that I bought from Mrs Corbett’s corner shop. Making this drawing was a revelation, like being given a new pair of eyes.

‘All of these early experiences engendered an enduring love of the Black Country and a curiosity and spirit of adventure which has never left me.’

That spirit of adventure has seen him travel the world and capture a diverse range of settings in his paintings.

A landscape painter in the English tradition, with works held in collections around Europe, Perry travels widely in the Renault van which he converted into a unique mobile field studio.
