This August we have two unmissable exhibitions in Galleries 1 and 2:
Portrait Prize, 27 Jul – 19 Aug, Gallery 2: our biennial showcase of contemporary portraits. Selected by established portrait artists, there is a top prize of £1,000 to be won. There’s also an accompanying programme of summer art workshops for adults.
Metropolis, 24 Aug – 30 Sept, Galleries 1 and 2: this celebration of city life is seen through a varied range of artworks. You’ll recognise many Birmingham scenes, and can also view cities from around the world.
Running alongside our exhibitions we have five solo shows this August at our art gallery in Birmingham.
Francesca Currie ARBSA: A Study Into True Representation, until 26 Aug: A collection of oil paintings that combine traditional techniques with contemporary viewpoints.
Nigel Priddey RBSA: 28 Aug – 7 Oct: Striking watercolour landscapes in Nigel’s bold and distinctive style.
Rob Hamp, Furthermore, until 12 Aug: Intriguing custom-built installation by one of our new Next Wave associates.
Andrew Matheson RBSA, Time for Tea, 14 Aug – 30 Sept: A selection of handmade teapots in stoneware and porcelain.
Paul Ki-Kydd RBSA, until 9 Sept: Coloured landscape drawings in mixed-media.
Brilliance in Birmingham, 22 May – 23 Sept: Celebrating the rich tradition of two centuries of designer-maker craft production in Birmingham, this is a showcase of the craftsmanship that continues to be practised to the highest standard by today’s local makers.
This month at the RBSA Gallery in Birmingham there’s a whole host of workshops, including specific portrait-themed workshops linked to our Portrait Prize exhibition!
For those exploring a new passion, or wanting to develop their artistic creativity, there are classes for all abilities at the RBSA this August, so visit us for a day out this summer!

Free, no need to book and suitable for everyone, we have two exciting demonstrations for you to enjoy this month:
Francesca Currie ARBSA, 5 Aug 11am – 1pm and 2 – 4pm: Linking to her solo show, Francesca will demonstrate how she sets up her still life subjects and paints them in oil, while using a contemporary take on the style of the Old Masters.
Gabrielle Roberts-Dalton RBSA, 19 August, 11am – 1pm: Watch Gabrielle turn self-portraits into detailed and symbolic creations inspired by stories.
