Artists at home: Steve Evans, John Martin and Mark Lippett

Where’s Everybody Gone, Steve Evans

Most of Steve Evan’s time during the lockdown period has been spent on a large 3D work called ‘Where’s Everybody Gone’. The original idea was to make a geometric abstraction, which evolved into a set of imagined structures resembling a cityscape. There are no inhabitants so the name refers to the feeling of emptiness in cities during the lockdown. It is made of soldered copper wire which is then spray painted and will be wall mounted.

John Martin RBSA

HMS Trent, John Martin

A few months ago, John Martin shared the first draft of his commissioned painting of HMS Trent. The painting has now been delivered to the ship’s commanding officer. The work proceeded well and without pressure during lockdown. Relying on photos to paint the ship, as lockdown preventing any site visits, John concluded that the process was “a bit like doing a portrait having never seen the subject.” The painting will now be permanently hung in the wardroom of HMS Trent as she sails for foreign parts.
