The Full Story

Ceramic Artist

Katie makes wheel thrown and hand-built ceramics inspired by elements of nature that she comes across whilst out walking.

Favourite sources of inspiration include bird’s eggs, rocks, pebbles, seaglass and seed heads. Their natural patterns, colours and texture provide inspiration for her collections of functional and decorative vessels which record walks through different landscapes.

Materials and process

Katie throws her bowls and vases on the wheel and uses clay bodies and glazes developed through ongoing experiments with different ingredients, temperatures and types of firing. The markings on the eggshell pieces are all hand-painted onto the powdery glaze before the final firing, whilst the rock and pebble vases are usually left unglazed to show the texture of the clay bodies and the natural colours achieved via two different firing atmospheres - gas reduction and electric oxidation.
