RBSA Portrait Prize 2019

Summary of the exhibition

The biennial Portrait Prize attracts talented artists from across the UK and beyond. This year’s show is selected by professional portrait painters John Devane, Robert Neil VP PPRBSA, Sara Shamma, and Jonathan Waller.

Artists entering have the chance to win a selection of prizes, including a £1,000 top prize and a People’s Choice Prize, selected from votes cast by visitors.

Information for artists wishing to enter

Deadline to enter 

Entry form, digital file(s) of the piece(s) entered and entry fee must be received by 4pm on Wednesday 12 June.

John Devane - RBSA Professor of Painting, Professor of Painting at Coventry University, and professional portrait artist.               
Robert Neil - RBSA Past President, current RBSA Vice President, and professional portrait artist.

Pre-selection and final selection

All entries must be submitted digitally and will be selected by a distinguished selection panel of independent judges who will make their selection based on the quality and technique of each work.

Once the pre-selected artworks have been delivered, a final selection will be made based on seeing the physical artworks.

The decision of the selection panel is final and no discussions will be entered into.

Closing Party & Prizes

Prizes will be awarded by John Devane at the Closing Party on Saturday 31 August, 2-4pm.

Call for entries - How to enter

  1. Click the link on the top right to download the application pack or send a SAE to the Gallery to request a hard-copy. Please use Adobe® Reader® (free software) if completing the application pack on a computer.
  2. Read through all the terms and conditions in the application pack.
  3. Complete the entry form and exhibit labels.
  4. Return the entry form by the deadline stated in the application pack. We recommend that artists submitting their entry by e-mail do so several days before the deadline to ensure there is time to deal with any technical difficulties.
  5. Pay your entry fee by: using PayPal (see below), calling the Gallery (0121 236 4353) to pay by card over the phone, or paying in person at the Gallery by cash or card.  Please note: Artists under 35 pay half-priced entry fees

Please ensure that you follow the instructions provided and check your payment carefully.

  1. Check how many works you are entering.
  2. Go to the correct button for your age - there are different buttons for artists aged over 35 and artists aged 35 and under.
  3. Select the correct entry fee amount from the drop down menu.
  4. Click the 'Pay your entry fee now' button. The yellow checkout button will take you to your PayPal account. The white button will take you to a guest account to pay using your card details.
  5. Do not edit the entry fee quantities in PayPal.

+ Is the latest (free) version of Adobe® Reader® installed on your computer?

+ Which browser are you using? We recommend Firefox.

+ Check that your computer settings allow you to download files.
