Margaret Fairhead

Margaret is a freelance textile artist. As well as RBSA she is also member of Jean Draper’s Design for Stitch Workshops, Birmingham Art Circle and local Arts Societies. She specialises in machine embroidered pieces, exploiting the possibilities provided by her digital sewing machine to develop a variety of textural effects and colour-ways in a painterly manner. Design sources have been sunsets, flowing water and reflections, floral pieces, and fruits in still life. Current work has been inspired by the RBSA bicentenary year with its focus on Birmingham. Initial pieces have all centred around the design potential of urban canal-side scenes between Newhall Street and Snow Hill in the centre of Birmingham. The canal is the Birmingham & Fazeley and the locks she has specifically drawn are from 9 to 13 on the Farmers’ Bridge Flight section of the canal. Workshops and talks given to Embroidery and Art groups by arrangement. The image illustrated is of Lock 9 and part of the ‘double tunnel’ at the foot of the steps from Newhall Street.
