John Davenport

Portraiture has become a major interest for John since he retired as Professor of Primary Dental Care at the University of Birmingham. He has staged solo exhibitions in Helmsley and the University of Birmingham and taken part in group shows with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Birmingham Art Circles. Portrait commissions include the Vice Chancellor of Malmo University, Sweden and the founder of the Birmingham Medical Institute. John was elected as an associate of the RBSA in 2001, and as a full member in 2003. He also held position as Hon. Secretary of the RBSA. John regularly gives demonstrations and workshops both at the RBSA and elsewhere. John’s primary concern is the ‘landscape’ of the human face. He creates a fairly literal representation of the sitter’s appearance and character. This is expressed by a variety of marks, giving a lively, painterly image. John’s preferred medium is acrylic, because it enables working at high speed John rarely undertakes commissions, but depending on circumstances at the time, is prepared to consider requests. A guide price for a head and shoulders portrait is £750.
