Othello in Pavilions

John studied Graphic Design in Birmingham. He has worked as an art teacher, Head of Department and advisor for Walsall Education Authority. He is currently a self-employed educational consultant and chief examiner for several qualifications. He was elected as an associate of the RBSA in 2008 and as a member in 2009. In the last four years, John has made a concerted effort to spend more time painting. He views portraiture as a means of expressing the uniqueness of each individual. Whilst John’s paintings tend to be based on photographic sources, they are certainly not photo-realistic. Oil is John’s preferred medium, because of its flexibility and the intensity of colour. John sees his work as following in the tradition of Breughel, Vermeer, and Hogarth who documented real life. Other inspirations include the Newlyn School artists Stanhope Forbes and Henry La Thangue. Their ‘square brush technique’ is particularly appealing.
