Steve Butt

"I studied art at Sutton Coldfield School of Art and Stafford University; afterwards I taught painting, drawing, printmaking and art theory in higher education throughout the midlands and currently hold the position of lecturer and demonstrator at the University of Central England.

I’m an eclectic artist who likes to work in two or three different styles; although within these styles there are three major themes that link the work together.

Firstly there is the notion of time, often introduced through semi abstract landscape which contains fragments of memory taken from childhood or objects that induce a sense of nostalgia.

The second theme is the clash of man made and natural form. This may take the idea of technology let loose into nature, the intrusion of a venting duct against a nude figure or even a geometric form juxtaposed with textural marks.

Finally there is the overall feeling for the doctrine of Pantheism as used in its broadest sense to describe a force or uniting power behind existence. In my work this will often be expressed in the relationship with form to landscape or the way a figure will relate to its surroundings, particularly the idea of it becoming part of the whole.

Matisse once suggested that artists should change their names once they became famous. In the spirit of this notion I often reinvent my methods over a period of time, hoping to discover some new way of reaffirming the themes I have mentioned."
