Paul Hipkiss
Paul Hipkiss was trained
at Stourbridge College of Art between 1955
and 1960 and there obtained his National
Diploma in Design in Ceramics and Lithography.
He began teaching in 1960, and from 1972
to 2000 headed the Art Department at Shenley
Court School, Birmingham.
Paul's artistic career has
taken several turns; after training, he
produced ceramics for some fifteen years
from his home studio. In the early 1970s
he was a regular exhibitor in the Winter
Salon at the RBSA galleries. He became increasingly
interested in photography and the graphic
aspects of art, a key experience being his
attending a print weekend at Westhill College,
where Michael Rothenstein gave a lecture
and demonstration. Shortly after this Paul
produced his first woodcut, an experience
that convinced him that print was to become
his preferred medium. In the last few years,
Paul has been experimenting with collagraph
techniques and with combining different
print methods within a single image.
Paul has shown his work
regularly at the RBSA galleries, and in
2005 was awarded the £250 Addenda prize at the RBSA Prize
exhibition. A member of the Birmingham Art
Circle, The Easel Club and the Dudley Society
of Artists, in 2001 Paul became the Honorary
Curator of the RBSA gallery.
Paul Hipkiss was elected
a Member of the Royal Birmingham Society
of Artists in 2000.
