John Davenport

I am a portrait painter fascinated by the infinite variety of facial form. I attempt close observation of the sitter's character and appearance expressed by means of a composition and variety of marks that create a lively, painterly image. My method of working on a portrait is to progress from the general to the particular and I much prefer to work from life than from photographs. However, some reference to the latter is sometimes unavoidable when the sitter is short of time. I paint in acrylic and often like to draw into the portrait in the later stages with water-soluble pastel.
