Graham Benton

Born in Birmingham, studied illustration and painting at Walsall College of Art and Wolverhampton College of Art. First came to St Ives as a student, meeting various notable artists. Travelled widely throughout Europe, India and Sri Lanka. Teaches painting part-time at Community Centres in the West Midlands.
Although often abstract and non representational in appearance Graham Benton's paintings are, to anyone who knows it, unmistakably influenced by the landscape of West Penwith.
The influence of the St Ives School of Frost, Lanyon and Hilton played a major part in the artist's earliest development in the mid '60s.
Movement of sea against rock and shore has often been the backbone of the free brush work in his oil paintings - earth and sea colours predominate but in addition a free and limited range of other colours are introduced - perspective and one particular viewpoint is eliminated and soon the painting takes off in its own right - landscape inspired, abstract in completion.
