Elaine Hind
My work is always porcelain
and is semi or non-functional, usually with
a lot of modelling. It has an element of
representationalism about it, or illustration.
My main subjects are natural forms, especially
flowers, although I also use still life
themes including decorative handbags and
shoes which I collect. I wish to capture
the spirit of the subject in a free and
sculptural way, never photographically.
The lamp is one of a series
inspired by the beautiful flower heads of
leeks, which have gone to seed., with their
mop heads of blossom on wavy stalks.
The lamp is hand built in a porcelain /
clay mix, fired in oxidation to 1260°C.
It is coloured with under glaze colours
and copper carbonate under a satin dolomite
glaze.
The glass "seeds" are fired separately
and added after firing. When lit in a darkened
room, patterns are cast on walls and ceilings.
