Eileen Hemsoll
Born in 1924 in the Black
Country Eileen Hemsoll was educated at Queen
Mary's in Walsall before becoming a student
at Birmingham College of Art in 1941. Artistic
recognition came early, with Eileen's portrait
"Clara shelling Peas" going to
the Royal Academy in 1948. After marrying,
Eileen emigrated to Canada where she was
elected as an Associate of the RBSA and
in 1972 as a full member.
Eileen's work is notable for its wonderful
colour and vigour, and while her early work
could be said to be in the Impressionist
vein, her painterly style is now much more
closely linked to notions of late Expressionism.
While her work can assume such labels, her
subject matter, vibrancy and joie de vivre
ensure that her work remains accessible
to all with readily identifiable scenes
of the domestic, lacking pretension yet
full of vitality.
