‘If we can abandon our assumption that we are looking at a quite usual thing, we shall find ourselves in the presence of something unparalleled and wonderful. If we recognise the novelty and wonder in such experiences, and take the chance to isolate and savour a sense of what is intimate and unintended in people, we shall cherish these images as much as anything we know.’ Laurence Gowing on figurative painting.
