Andrew Coates
Collections of objects chosen
from urban, rural and coastal environments
and bought from junk shops and market stalls,
together with a range of coloured and patterned
woods provide materials for assemblages,
collages and drawings. Influences and references
include: the formal simplicity and simultaneity
of Ikon painting; the wit and ingenuity
of Picasso; the painterlyness of such as
Monet and Dubuffet; the geometry of Malevich;
the magic of Ernst and Palmer; the language
of Klee derived from a reverence for nature;
the practice of Gainsborough who constructed
landscape installations in the studio; and
the ability of Schwitters and Thubron to
incorporate found objects.
