The RBSA elects Members and Associates once a year at their Annual General Meeting which is held on the last Sunday of April. To be elected an Associate the candidate must be nominated by two full Members. On election day the candidate presents six pieces of work for exhibition. Members are asked to vote for the candidates of their choice. The candidate must carry 51% of the vote of Members to be elected. The same process is used for the election of full Members. An artists must be an Associate before being elected a full Member.

Election to the Society allows artists to show 12 pieces of work per year in RBSA exhibitions. Members and Associates are elected in categories of painter, sculptor, potter, printmaker, textiles, and jewellery. At present there are nearly 200 Members and Associates. Open Exhibition Artists from outside the RBSA are invited to submit works to the RBSA exhibitions as well as the RBSA £1,000 Prize Competition.
