Craft Gallery Exhibitions 2009

The RBSA Craft Gallery is firmly established as being the region’s leading outlet for contemporary craft.  With a range of craft mediums and price ranges catered for, visitors will be inspired by the versatility and affordability of handmade craft.  More wearable and functional designs are exhibited alongside innovative craftwork as a means of fostering and promoting the talents of some of Britain’s foremost designer makers.

11 January - 26 March

'In the Making'

The RBSA Craft Gallery's first exhibition of 2010 will devote itself to exploring the process of making. Featuring all new designer-makers who are inspired by the physical act of making, it will reveal varying responses to their chosen materials and tools. The exhibition will show a range of inventive techniques that challenge traditional craft-making methods.

Exhibiting for the first time will be jeweler and silversmith, Hannah Souter. Working in precious metals such as Silver and 18ct Gold, Hannah's jewellery comprises of hand pressformed and individually fabricated units combined with subtle surface textures and contrasting finishes to create unique pieces of fine jewellery. Inh er most recent range, the metal is prepared from rolling silver with antique lace found in her Great-Grandparents' home, capturing the delicate pattern and preserving a small piece of history.

Works from contemporary wood-turner, Richard Murphy and illustrative ceramics from Adam Frew will also be on show.

Best of Brum

Famous for the production of various 'manufactured arts' during the eighteenth century, Birmingham has always been at the forefront of craft design and production. With its roots firmly placed in historical creative industries, the RBSA Craft Gallery celebrates the city's own designer-makers. To coincide with the RBSA's ten years in the Jewellery Quarter anniversary, the Craft Gallery will dedicate this exhibition to distinguished designer makers from the second city. 'Best of Brum' will include jewellers and silversmiths such as Louise Chesshire and Kerry O'Connor who are both based in the Jewellery Quarter.

'The completed surfaces of my work are the product of my desire to unite the conceptual intention with the physical knowledge and understanding gained initially through drawing. I work through first hand study, making observed drawings which are developed later using memory rather than the actual subject. This is vital to build that distinguishing difference between the source and what one wants to make of it.

Gerry Unsworth's work is strongly influenced by the votive figures used in many religions throughout history. The ceramic techniques employed are very wide and include raku and smoking.
